Movement, shelter, food and life history shape responses. A burned landscape is not one habitat, and one sighting is not a population trend.

Fire changes cover, food, nest sites, water and exposure. Some mobile animals leave an affected patch; others use newly open areas or surviving refuges. Aquatic organisms may also be affected later by sediment and altered flows.

Because species differ, “wildlife recovery” is too broad to be one measurement. Monitoring must match the organism and ecological question.
